Thursday Night Video – Cenk Uygur on Money in Politics

Cenk Uygur makes his case for why we need a constitutional amendment against money in politics, and a large part of it is his feeling that many Democrats are paid to lose. Whether or not you think that’s happening, it’s certainly the case that Democrats frequently choose not to be populist and therefore give up their most popular issues. It was infuriating in 2010 to watch the Democrats cede populism to the Tea Party. The Obama campaign turns to populism during election years, so maybe the Democrats will do better this year. And I hope that the Obama administration doesn’t let go of the populism once the election is won and done.

Friday Night Video – Did Representative Mike Coffman Misspeak? Did He Apologize?

The Young Turks do a good job contextualizing the borderline birther comments of Representative Mike Coffman (R-CO), explaining how he may be walking back his comments about President Obama being Un-American due to redistricting that make his district less conservative. But the real kudos have to go to local reporter Kyle Clark from 9News. My astonishment at seeing such doggedly intelligent reporting is only surpassed my incredulity at Coffman’s doggedly unintelligent response.

Wednesday Night Video – The New York Times Catering to Conservatives

It’s amazing what happens when actual liberal voices appear in the media. Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks correctly chastises The New York Times for their most recent attempts criticize President Obama in a way specifically designed to please the conservatives. Uygur contrasts that with the actual facts, bringing up The Pew Research study that shows how Mitt Romney has been getting more than twice the positive coverage in the news than Obama. Positive coverage of Obama has actually been at 18%, and I’m willing to bet that most of that criticism has come from the right, as opposed to the left. If there is a liberal media, the New York Times ain’t it.

UYGUR: Mainstream media, in this case The New York Times, looks at itself and says “Oh no, we didn’t do the right-wing enough of a favor. We’re giving 2-1 positive coverage to Mitt Romney. Maybe it should be 3-1, maybe it should be 4-1. Right-wing, please don’t call us liberals!”

Trayvon Truths

The attacks against Trayvon Martin have continued after his death, with the police leaking information to newspapers to indicate that Martin did not go without a fight.

With a single punch, Trayvon Martin decked the Neighborhood Watch volunteer who eventually shot and killed the unarmed 17-year-old, then Trayvon climbed on top of George Zimmerman and slammed his head into the sidewalk, leaving him bloody and battered, law-enforcement authorities told the Orlando Sentinel.

According to this news report, law enforcement is selectively leaking information to try and suggest that the murdered teenager somehow had it coming. But let’s say it’s somehow true. Let’s say that the police have reversed their prior pattern of behavior and are somehow being upfront and honest now as they, um, leak information. Even if it is true that Trayvon, who had gone to get snacks from 7-11 during the NBA All Star Game halftime, had fought back against the man who has already admitted on tape that he was stalking the kid, what would that change about the essential truths of the case?
