ThinkProgress posted an article Saturday about a speech given last week at Wesleyan University by ultra-conservative Supreme Court justice Antonin Scalia. They focused on Scalia’s lack of knowledge when it comes to the landmark Bush v. Gore decision, in which the conservative Court handed the presidential election to George Bush the Junior, quite literally deciding that the votes didn’t matter.

There are some political issues which require taking the fight beyond a case-by-case basis, as they require fundamental change to our legal framework. One of them is, of course, the way in which the Supreme Court of the United States has granted rights to corporations which were intended for actual people.

The Supreme Court is set to strike a blow against affirmative action, based on a Texas case in which a white student complained about race being one of the many factors for consideration in the University of Texas admissions process. This is one of those many cases where those conservatives arguing in favor of a color blind system want us to be blind so that we avoid ensuring a diversity of educational opportunity.

Larry McCarthy is the racist sleazeball who masterminded the “Willie Horton ad.” In the 1988 presidential campaign between George H. W. Bush and Michael Dukakis, McCarthy made the image of a scary black criminal the difference in the election. And yes, he’s still working on behalf of the Republicans…and Mitt Romney.

I love Little Steven’s Underground Garage and wish I knew how to podcast it. It’s one of the few radio shows I know that introduces me new stellar songs from yesterday and today, with erudition but without elitism — just a sincere love of music.
On Tuesday Steven Van Zandt visited Howard Stern and covered a range of topics, from learning the guitar to his least favorite Supreme Court decision.

Another hour, another incisive Talking Points Memo article, this time on how the challenge to Obama’s health care expansion exposes conservative hypocrisy. On logical grounds, we know that most political conservatives are lying liars who lie, but of course they don’t care about the purity of their ideals. It’s about power, not logical consistency.
On the other hand, reading about the expansion of Medicare is a good reminder of some of the good that Obama has done. His fight against a single payer option was stupid in terms of both politics and policy, but every step towards, you know, helping sick people is a healthy step.
