Monday Night Video – Saturday Night Live’s Take on the Second Presidential Debate

While we wait a few more minutes for Debate Three, here’s a comic look back at Debate Two, as presented by the folk at Saturday Night Live.

That is, if this post even posts! I’m flying back to San Francisco at the moment, making use of inflight internet. Sure, it’s probably giving us all cancer, but at least we’re getting entertained along the way. :)

I think SNL did a pretty good job, satirizing the questioners as well as the questioned.

Sunday Night Video – Saturday Night Live Takes on the Obama-Romney Debate

From Obama’s hems and haws to Romney’s robotic stare, SNL did a decent job yesterday. It’s not laugh-out-loud, but definitely amusing. They present a strong contrast between Obama’s excessive geniality and Romney’s machine-like falsehoods.

Tuesday Night Video – SNL Mocks Undecided Voters

Have you already seen the Saturday Night Live video from the weekend, in which they mock the stupidity of undecided voters? There are a couple of major insights that are finally breaking into the national consciousness this election year. One of them is the realization that tax cuts for the rich benefit the rich and no one else. I hope that another is that the undecided voter is the uninformed voter, at best.

Tuesday Night Video – SNL Presents Eastwood and Chair

Parodies are usually less slick than the original. One of the things I like about Saturday Night Live’s take on Clint Eastwood’s bizarre turn at the Republican National Convention is that they kept the crazy, and just gave it slicker packaging and better timing.

Monday Night Video – Jimmy Fallon’s Audition for Saturday Night Live

Jimmy Fallon’s audition tape for Saturday Night Live is up on YouTube and fairly interesting for comedy fans. It’s not that it’s very funny in itself — most of the content is fairly weak — but his versatility and his professionalism are easily visible. He’s a likeable guy and it’s easily understandable why Fallon was hired for a show which needs speed and productivity, as well as why Lorne Michaels hired him again years to be late night talk show host, which requires a similar sort of range and work ethic.

Jonah Hill Hosts Saturday Night Live

Having watched Saturday Night Live last week in order to check out Lindsay Lohan’s state of being, I figured that I ‘d catch it again this past weekend to see how different it would be when hosted by Jonah Hill. The answer? Very different.

Lindsay Lohan on Saturday Night Live

Lindsay Lohan hosted Saturday Night Live this past weekend because Lorne Michaels works overtime to make the show relevant to the pop culture discussion, while Lohan needed a forum in which to show insurance companies that she can be relied upon to show up for her gigs and that she hasn’t sputtered out at the age of 25.

My thoughts were mixed as I saw Lohan step forward to make her monologue. Lindsay is such a subject of scrutiny that the liveness of the show felt like it mattered again. There’s Lindsay, it’s actually her!

But what happened to her face?

Thursday Night Video – “Weird Al” in Japan in 1984

“Weird Al Yankovic” is the first guest this week on on WTF with Marc Maron. Al spoke about this video.

It was one of the most surrealistic experiences of my life. I was on this TV show, I don’t remember the name of it, but they billed it as the Saturday Night Live of Japan and I was there singing “Eat It” phonetically in half-English, half-Japanese. And while I’m singing there’s a chorus line of dancing sumo wrestlers, there’s a guy that gets wheeled out on a gurney in a giant lobster outfit and demands that I eat him. It was very Lost in Translation.

Lana Del Rey’s Growing Pains

I first heard about Lana Del Rey during the lead-up to her January 14th appearance on Saturday Night Live. It was a big deal that producer Lorne Michaels booked a musical act who hadn’t yet had major label success, and the critical reaction was widely negative. Actress Juliette Lewis withdrew her initial tweet, that had stated

Wow, watching this ‘singer’ on SNL is like watching a 12-year-old in their bedroom when they’re pretending to sing and perform #signofourtimes.

Polentical and Google

Matthew’s post about Google results got me thinking. If he’s looking into which searches lead readers to Polentical, is he also planting search terms to actively draw readers? Inquiring minds want to know.

Top Ten Gigs After Leaving SNL

Matthew’s Victoria Jackson post got me thinking about what Saturday Night Live alums have been doing since leaving the show. Here’s a list of the most interesting or impressive jobs I’m aware of. Maybe someone will be able to fill me in on some I’ve missed or forgotten about.

In response to Jesus Not That Good At Sports, a friend of mine pointed me to Saturday Night Live’s comic take on the Tim Tebow Experience.
