Saturday Night Video – Bruce Springsteen, “Born in the USA”

I don’t know if you’ve ever heard the original demo for Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” but it’s a fairly gut-wrenching song of the struggles that can be borne by being born in this country. Here’s a different version from that original, and also different from the rock anthem version that he put on the 1984 album. It’s an acoustic version from Spanish television, and helps show how Springsteen belongs to the folk (as well as rock) tradition.

I love Little Steven’s Underground Garage and wish I knew how to podcast it. It’s one of the few radio shows I know that introduces me new stellar songs from yesterday and today, with erudition but without elitism — just a sincere love of music.

Van Halen Hitting the Road in 2012

The Huffington Post has a dubious list of rock autobiographies to avoid. I definitely disagree with them on selections such as Keith Richards’ Life, which I didn’t find at all incoherent. I found it incredibly revealing, not so much in the details it gave away regarding Richards’ drug use or sexual exploits, but in the sense it gave you of the dynamic in the band. The more rock autobiographies you read, the more you understand how these rock bands are not in control of the situation, even (or especially) when they’re supposedly on top of the world. They still serve at the whim of the record promoter or the audiences or their bandmates.
