Another Republican Explains Rape to Us

When is the GOP going to realize that their attempts to show they get it are only making things worse?

The Only Difference is the Victim’s Consent

I lived something similar to [rape] with my own family. … Uh, having a baby out of wedlock.

–Senate candidate Tom Smith to the Associated Press

To this rape-child debate I can bring
Real experience. We know the sting
Of this stuff. Man it sucks!
I can cut to the crux
Of what rape is: it’s sex with no ring.

Quote of the Day: Howard Stern Gives Advice to Todd Akin

You got duped by some dude who told you he was a doctor and gave you advice that women can keep sperm away from themselves when they’re, you know, “legitimately raped.” You really think you should be making a judgment call on anything? You should question everything about yourself.

- Howard Stern on his radio show (August 22, 2012)

Steve King on Rape and Incest Victims

Republicans dealing with the fallout from Senate candidate Todd Akin’s ridiculous claims about rape victims continue to give us insights into their thinking about rape. Here’s the contribution of Rep. Steve King, who is becoming a frequent Polentical topic.

The Buddy System

[Rep. Steve] King [wants to] ban Federal funding of abortions… for victims of statutory rape or incest–for example, a 12 year old who gets pregnant. Congressman King says he’s not aware of any young victims like that. “Well I just haven’t heard of that being a circumstance that’s been brought to me in any personal way(.)”

–Radio station KMEG

We have got to reduce what we spend
Says Steve King. His solution? Just end
Any spending that he,
Rep. Steve King, cannot see
As a help to a personal friend.

Todd Akin on the Secret Powers of Rape Victims

Matthew beat me to this one–twice–and my contribution probably doesn’t add anything, but I can’t let this quote pass without taking a whack at it.

Maybe It’s the Doctors Who Aren’t Legitimate

or

I Can’t Believe He Said “That Whole Thing”

From what I understand from doctors, (pregnancy from rape) is really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.

Congressman and Senate nominee Todd Akin, on KTVI-TV

Mr. Akin says women can halt
Any pregnancy from an assault.
They have “ways” that for men
Are beyond what we ken.
She’s with child? Then it’s must be her fault.

If her body decides to permit
That a fetus be planted in it,
It’s a pretty good test
Whose result should suggest
That the rape wasn’t really legit.

And let’s cheer for a congressman who
Does this topic without working blue.
The fine phrase “that whole thing”
Has an innocent ring
Should a lady hear. (They vote now, too.)

GOP Senatorial Candidate Todd Akin Understands Biology and Women’s Rights

How dare Democrats accuse Republicans of waging a war against women, their bodies, and their rights? During a recent interview with KTVI-TV, GOP Senatorial candidate Todd Akin outlined the Tea Party stance toward abortion rights for rape victims.

AKIN: If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try and shut that whole thing down.

You hear that, ladies? If you are raped and it results in pregnancy, you obviously didn’t try hard enough to shut it down.

TV in Review: Louie, “Telling Jokes / Set Up”

For the second episode of season three, “Telling Jokes / Set Up,” Louie offers us rape as the entree. But first comes the appetizer, in the form of a little humor analysis. Louie’s daughters are telling knock-knock jokes, and Louie explaining to an audience at the Comedy Cellar just why he enjoys their humor so much.

LOUIE: I’ve been doing comedy for twenty-five years. I know every joke. Even if I haven’t heard it, you start to tell me a joke, I know how it’s gonna work. But her jokes — I have no idea what’s gonna happen. I have no idea. This is the joke she told me the other day. She said, “Who didn’t let the gorilla into the ballet? Who didn’t let the gorilla into the ballet?” Already I love this joke. I love this joke! I have not heard this joke.

So What’s Funny About Prison Rape?

From Lindsay Lohan on Saturday Night Live:

what’s up with a society that accepts and often celebrates our prisons as places of sexual violence? Way to be cutting edge, SNL.

I’m glad Matthew has brought up this humor cliche, which has bothered me for a long time.

Rachel Maddow and the Language of Lefty Politics

The left (and sensible centrists) have been appropriately outraged over the rape facilitation legislation that various Republican state legislatures have take up of late.
Anti-abortion bills. Rachel Maddow took a look at this issue yesterday and her segment made me wonder why the Democrats aren’t better at messaging. Trans-vaginal or not, these ultrasounds are medically unnecessary elements of the Republicans attempt at social engineering. Why not call them out for forced medical experimentation, and make them address the issue of medical necessity?

Virginia Republicans Pass Rape Facilitation Legislation

I first mentioned this issue last night. Over at Slate, Dahlia Lithwick has one of the better rundowns of the new law passed by Virginia Republicans (and soon to be signed by radically right-wing governor Bob McDonnell) which will force many women seeking an abortion to be raped by a transvaginal probe. It’s for no medical reason, so it’s either to punish them for their supposed wrongdoing or because these Republicans get off on rape. Perhaps a bit of both.

Thursday Night Video – Republican Party the Party of Rape

Republicans this week banned women from participating in Congressional testimony about birth control and suggested that women should shut their traps about the cost of birth control and just put a Bayer aspirin between their knees:
