Running Things
Under three, high twos. I had a two hour and fifty-something.
–Paul Ryan on his top marathon time, to Hugh Hewitt
[Ryan] is listed as having finished [his only marathon] in 4 hours, 1 minute, and 25 seconds.
If I were to do any rounding, it would certainly be to four hours, not three.
–Ryan’s explanation of his misstatement
Mr. Budget Man shows an astounding
Skill with numbers plain folks find confounding.
Changing “larger than four”
To “a little bit more
Than 2:50″ for him is just rounding.

It’s not the most entertaining of their political ads, but the Obama campaign does a good job of highlighting the main falsehoods presented by Paul Ryan in his convention speech. I’m also impressed that CNN took part in pointing out some of the facts. All too often, they hide behind a false objectivity in order to avoid the heavy lifting of fact-checking.

Paul Ryan’s love of Rage Against the Machine is amusing, because he is the embodiment of the machine that our music has been raging against for two decades. Charles Manson loved the Beatles but didn’t understand them. Governor Chris Christie loves Bruce Springsteenbut doesn’t understand him. And Paul Ryan is clueless about his favorite band, Rage Against the Machine.
…
Don’t mistake me, I clearly see that Ryan has a whole lotta “rage” in him: A rage against women, a rage against immigrants, a rage against workers, a rage against gays, a rage against the poor, a rage against the environment. Basically the only thing he’s not raging against is the privileged elite he’s groveling in front of for campaign contributions.

From Up With Chris Hayes, here’s the lowdown on where Paul Ryan stands with deficit spending. Of course, the fact that Ryan wants to cut assistance to the poor is somehow a sign that he’s fiscally responsible, because baby angels smile when only the wealthy have health care.

Look, Ryan hasn’t “crunched the numbers”; he has just scribbled some stuff down, without checking at all to see if it makes sense. He asserts that he can cut taxes without net loss of revenue by closing unspecified loopholes; he asserts that he can cut discretionary spending to levels not seen since Calvin Coolidge, without saying how; he asserts that he can convert Medicare to a voucher system, with much lower spending than now projected, without even a hint of how this is supposed to work. This is just a fantasy, not a serious policy proposal.

The key thing to watch with Mitt Romney’s choice of Paul Ryan as the GOP VP nominee is how the traditional media covers Ryan Economics. Ryan has a reputation as being “serious” and it’s true that he actually put his (or rather, our) money where his mouth is, in that he came up with a semblance of an actual budget. It’s more detailed than any economic plan put forth by Mittens, who sure loves his vagueries. Indeed, Romney is already backing away from Ryan’s plan. He wants to keep the supposed principles in place without offering any of the details. But the Paul Ryan economic plan is only serious in that it contains actual numbers. As far as a rational plan for economic growth, it’s bonkers, and Paul Ryan is full of faulty logic and overt hypocrisy.
