Monday Night Video – The Ed Show on Romney v. Democracy in Ohio

Ohio Republicans, like Fox News, are vocal opponents of democracy when it means actual democracy (enabling people to vote) rather than their version of democracy (allowing rich white males to vote). Hence the conservatives’ attempts to suppress the vote, including a move to restrict in-person early voting.

Ed Schultz is joined by former Ohio Governor Ted Strickland to discuss how Mitt Romney is attempting to spin the Democrats’ lawsuit to restore these rights as an attack on patriotism, soldiers, and patriotic soldiering apple pies. Schultz starts off his report on the situation by saying…

SCHULTZ: Once again, Mitt Romney doesn’t have the facts.

…but I disagree. Romney has all the facts. He just don’t care.

The Right to Work Without Rights

Rachel Maddow is right that the conservative crusade against unions and worker protection in Wisconsin should be seen as political as well as ideological, in that they are attempting to make sure that it’s only corporations and billionaires who can spend big on elections. Which will lead to more for the billionaires and ever-fewer worker protections. Around and around we go.

MADDOW: Killing off the unions is what Republicans want to do in every state of the country. That is why Scott Walker is the poster boy for the Republican Party this year. Republicans understand that this is the way they can win not just now, not just in the current election cycle, but forever. Republicans get this, and they want it to happen in every state in the country. Republicans get this. Do Democrats get it?

Does Democracy Mean Democracy to the GOP?

ThinkProgress is right to sound the alarm on Florida Governor Rick Scott’s attempt to suppress voting in his state. As they pointed out yesterday, he’s trying to purge voters from the voting rolls, using a list of ineligible voters from the DMV that is highly outdated and inaccurate. In Miami Dade, the list of purged voters has already turned out to be over 20% inaccurate, and that’s just based on the people who received the notice and were able to send in verification of their citizenship. How many others did not receive the notice or manage to send in verification for a second time? And what is the GOP doing relying on the Department of Motor Vehicles to secure our democracy? The party that distrusts the ability of government to tie its shoes is putting the future of our democracy in the hands of the DMV?

Saturday Night Videos – The Ed Show Takes On Rush Limbaugh

This week Rush Limbaugh went on record that women who have sex are sluts. It’s rare for him to backtrack on his bile, which is why his statement

I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for the insulting word choices.

is being misunderstood as an actually apology, rather than what it is, which is a weasel’s claim that style is what counts here, and not substance.

Wednesday Night Video – Bernie Sanders on The Ed Show

I appreciate that Ed Schultz will actually call out politicians such as Rick Santorum for lying when they willfully misstate the facts. Schultz points out the lie that gas prices are up due to insufficient drilling, noting that oil production is actually up. Schultz and Senator Bernie Sanders discuss higher gas prices and argue that speculation has more of an impact on price fluctuation than supply and demand.

Saturday Night Video – Jessie Jackson on The Ed Show

Fresh from pushing President Obama to water down the stimulus and reject universal health care, Rahm Emanuel is targeting public schools in Chicago’s minority neighborhoods for shutdown. I particularly appreciate Jessie Jackson’s reminder that we have to consider larger issues like poverty when considering test scores.

Thursday Night Video – GOP Debate Extremism

Don’t feel obliged to watch the whole thing, but it’s worth checking out the GOP debate clips played in the beginning of this segment from The Ed Show. Gingrich accusing Obama of infanticide and Romney accusing Obama of assaulting civil liberties.

Is Romney really going to be able to tack toward the center if he wins the nomination? Can he even see the center from where he’s currently resides?

Monday Night Video – The Ed Show on Newt Gingrich

The Ed Show takes on racism as practiced by Newt Gingrich and the Republican party. A couple points I agree with in particular: that Gingrich isn’t at all subtle about his racism, and that the Republicans hatred of Europe is ironic considering the absurd austerity policies currently being promoted across that continent.
