Hall of Fame Short-Sighted to See Only the Long-Term

The Hall of Fame’s failure to elect anyone from the unusually long list of talented players on this year’s ballot has prompted a lot of complaints, so it gives me a chance to complain about the Hall, too. Why are the voters focused so exclusively on career numbers? Just as it isn’t the Hall of Virtue, it also isn’t the Hall of Accounting. Honoring only those who compiled big stats prevents the Hall from acknowledging some of the greatest contributions to the game. Here are a few of the players whose short-term accomplishments should qualify them for Cooperstown.

Friday Night Baseball – Fenway Anniversary

The first official baseball game at Fenway was played 100 years ago today. It was originally scheduled for April 18, 1912, but was rained out twice.

P.E.D. Spells Positive

I never got the hatred of Barry Bonds. He was the best player in baseball without PEDs, then PEDs became the rage and he became the best player in baseball on PEDs.

100% purity is too tall of an order, but demonstrating some sort of ability to deal with the reality could be a positive for the game.  That is, if Braun actually took performance-enhancing drugs and is punished for it, it could take us away from the whole angel/demon split, and instead allow that drugs are used in professional sports — but also that such drug use can be dealt with. A more manageable shade of grey.

ESPN: Ryan Braun of Milwaukee Brewers tests positive for performance-enhancing drug

UPDATE ON 12/11: According to Ken Rosenthal (via twitter):

Source: Braun tested positive for a prohibited substance, not a performance-enhancing drug. More coming on FOXSports.com.

Which would mean that might have to deal with a lot of moralizing about illegal drug use that has little to do with the integrity of baseball, as opposed to dealing with PEDs. Or it might be pushback from within the Braun camp.

Pujols to Play with the Angels

I’m not so bothered with how baseball divides its money. Giving it to the players seems at least as good as giving it to the owners. But all the tax money that’s been used to build stadiums…that ain’t coming back.

Update on 12/10/11: USA Today has a rundown on how the deal happened.
