Thursday Night Video – Al Green, “Love and Happiness”

Live on Soul Train. Happy V-Day, everyone.

Monday Night Video – The Spinners, “Rubberband Man”

My brother Andrew underwent ACL surgery a few years ago and recently gave one of our nephews the old rubber bands he used for rehabbing his knee. Our nephews and niece are great at making use of found objects.

Andrew says that the rubber bands remind him of the props used by The Spinners in their video for “Rubberband Man.” The odd, odd exercises start around the 3 minute mark.

Wednesday Night Video – Dick Durbin vs. Wayne LaPierre

It doesn’t take a genius to realize that the executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, Wayne LaPierre, is an ideologue. Still, it’s refreshing to watch Illinois Senator Durbin of call out LaPierre, and point out that the point of background checks is precisely to reduce the purchase of guns by those who can’t pass background checks.

I get very frustrated with the argument that we shouldn’t attempt to reduce the number of criminals with guns because there will still be criminals with guns. There is always going to be crime — are we not supposed to try and reduce it?

Friday Night Video – Claire Danes Crying

One of the reasons I haven’t been posting lately is because I’ve been in rehearsal. Today, one of the actors mentioned this compilation of Claire Danes crying. Her chin quiver is particularly impressive. And it reminds me that I should really check out Homeland once I get more free time.

Thursday Night Video – The Best News Bloopers of 2012

It’s a lengthy clip, and not exactly highbrow. Definitely some salty language that’s not safe for work! But I needed a few laughs as we get near the end of 2012. It’s been great at times, but also tough. In other words, life.

My favorite moment of the blooper reel? Watch for “I so pale.”

Monday Night Christmas Song – DMX, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”

‘nuf said.

Monday Night Christmas Song – Jimmy Fallon, The Roots, and Mariah Carey, “All I Want For Xmas Is You”

It’s the kids’ chorus that makes this one extra fun.

Thursday Night Video – Teaching Dogs to Drive

I heard this mentioned on the Stern show but forgot about it until my friend S. emailed a link. I love how casual the dogs seem as they go about their driving. Of course, you’re going to have to teach a cat to drive before I’m really impressed.

Wednesday Night Music – Bettye LaVette, “Let Me Down Easy”

Went to a new hair stylist recently and was impressed by his taste. He recommended a 1930s comedy duo I’d never heard of, a treatise on dirty jokes that had also escaped my attention, a small bookstore on Post Street in San Francisco — and the music playing in his salon was Bettye LaVette. Here she is singing “Let Me Down Easy.”

Tuesday Night Video – World’s Fastest Juggling Pianist

World’s fastest juggling pianist? Or world’s only juggling pianist?

Sunday Night Video – Questioning Woody Allen

I haven’t seen Robert Weide’s Woody Allen: A Documentary, but I’m interested. Watching the following unusual questions posed to Allen, I was struck at how much of an old man Allen is. Sure, he’s long looked old and even creepy, but more than the answers, I was struck by his slowed-down demeanor. Presumably it’s partially just due to him not playing the frantic version of himself he places on the big screen, but sitting down to answer questions one-on-one.

Saturday Night Video – Stare of the Gator

I suspect it’s a good thing that YouTube didn’t exist when I was an undergraduate, or I might have spent all my college days making videos like this. It goes on a bit long, but maybe that’s the point.
