Conservatives Betray Selfish Rationale

Mitt Romney and other conservatives have suggested that Obama was reelected because his voters wanted stuff. Policies like immigration reform, gay marriage, and above all health care reform were seen as give-aways for which voters grabbed. The idea has been rightly ridiculed, but I haven’t seen anyone comment about how it reflects on conservatives’ voting choices.

* I was born a U.S. citizen, and I support the rights of immigrants.

* I’m heterosexual, and I support the right of same-sex couples to marry.

* I have employer-supplied health care, and I support extending health care to all.

* I’m white, and I support affirmative action.

* I’m male, and I support equal rights and equal pay for women, as well as access to contraception.

* I earn more than the minimum wage, and I support making sure minimum wage workers can afford a decent standard of living.

* I have no reason to think I will be targeted for torture, and I oppose torture and I want those who authorized it under the last administration to be held accountable.

* The worst effects of global warning will occur after I’m gone, and I support doing far more than we’re doing to combat the warming (or, more accurately, to avoid making it worse).

None of these statements makes me unusual in any way.

Where do conservative politicians and pundits get the idea that people vote out of self-interest, rather than in the interests of their country? The only reason that I can think of for such an assumption is that that is how they make their own choices.

Election Ads 2012: a Postmortem

The November 19th issue of The New Yorker contains an interesting “Talk of the Town” piece entitled “Seeing Spots,” which is about Priorities USA ads such as “Stage.” You may remember “Stage.” It’s the ad about workers whose lives were severely damaged by the unethical practices of Mitt Romney’s private-equity firm Bain Capital.

Thursday Night Video – Romney Concedes He’s Still Rich

From the same people who brought you the presidential debates in song format, here’s Mitt Romney singing his concession speech and laughing all the way to the bank.

Dick Morris Explains Failure of Romney Landslide

Black Eye

The key reason for my bum prediction is that I mistakenly believed that the 2008 surge in black, Latino, and young voter turnout would recede in 2012 to “normal” levels. Didn’t happen.

Don’t feel bad, Dick. Although it is true
You completely and thoroughly blew
++++Your prediction, I note:
++++That minorities vote
Mitt’s entire campaign forgot, too.

Wednesday Night Charts & Graphs – Hurricane Sandy Was No Game Changer

Conservatives are going to try and spin their election loss in a couple of ways. One is to say that Romney was not a real conservative. Electorally, I’m happy for them to believe that, as it will lead them to nominate another out-of-touch wackadoodle, although in terms of policy I’d rather have them return to Planet Earth.

The other excuse will be that Chris Christie’s new-found love of Big Government slowed some sort of mystical Mittmentum. Via pbump, here’s a handy dandy chart demonstrating that Hurricane Sandy did not slow any Romney momentum. The main reason? The Romney momentum only existed in the mouths of the Romney camp and in the heads of the mush-brained pundits who believed them.

Quote of the Day: Jon Oliver on America’s Electoral Choices

America will either vote to re-elect President Obama. Or elect a President Romney, which doesn’t sound quite right, and that’s largely because it wouldn’t be.

Monday Night Video – Obama Hits Back at Romney’s Auto Lies

With the election increasingly close, it’s essential that President Obama’s team be quick on its feet to refute any new Romney lies, such as Romney’s suggestion that auto companies in Ohio are outsourcing jobs due to Obama policies. (Never mind the fact that Romney has been a chief proponent of outsourcing.) The Obama administration just released this ad, which is good. It’s direct, factual, and doesn’t pull punches.

Romney’s Hurricane Sandy Advice

Witty and insightful on his own, 0dysseus pointed me to the comic Twitter account Mitt’s Storm Tips, warning that we should enjoy these while we can, as it may very well turn tragic quite soon. 0dysseus himself lives in the path of the storm and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Sandy will calm down, of course.

Sunday Night Video – Joss Whedon Endorses Romney, Zombie Apocalypse

Quick quiz time!

Joss Whedon has:
a) a great sense of humor
b) a social conscious
c) both of these, plus a well-lit kitchen

The right answer lies within the following video…

Wednesday Night Video – Rachel Maddow Visits David Letterman for Post-Debate Discussion

Rachel Maddow visited the self-described “sixty-five year old male voter” David Letterman last night. Topics included Maddow explaining how Romney’s plan for the auto industry was to rely upon non-existent private funding, how Ted Kennedy put together RomneyCare, and how Romney relied upon hundreds of millions of dollars of federal funding for the Salt Lake Olympics in 2002. Extras included a visual contradiction of Romney’s claim that Syria is Iran’s path to the sea, and Letterman going off on the lack of discussion of global warming and gun control.

Tuesday Night Video – Last Night’s Final Debate, Songified

I don’t think it’s quite as strong an effort as the Songification of the second debate, but the chorus is catchy and the additional hand gestures for Bob Schieffer are a stroke of genius.

Monday Night Video – Saturday Night Live’s Take on the Second Presidential Debate

While we wait a few more minutes for Debate Three, here’s a comic look back at Debate Two, as presented by the folk at Saturday Night Live.

That is, if this post even posts! I’m flying back to San Francisco at the moment, making use of inflight internet. Sure, it’s probably giving us all cancer, but at least we’re getting entertained along the way. :)

I think SNL did a pretty good job, satirizing the questioners as well as the questioned.
