Doctor Watson Sits in Chairs, “The Reichenbach Fall” Edition

Okay, so I realize that I may be the only one fixating on such minor matters, but every time I watch Sherlock, it seems that there is an awful lot of John Watson sitting in chairs.

Here are some pics Doctor Watson sitting in chairs, all from “The Reichenbach Fall”.

I had to do it! I've been waiting to finish off Sherlock (so to speak), in part because life has been busy, and in part because it would mean a lengthy wait for season three before my next Sherlock fix. But I just had to watch "The Reichenbach Fall" before it official airs on PBS in May.

Once again, I don't do a full recap, but turn back now if you haven't seen the episode and want to avoid any surprises.

The good news is that most Sherlock fans in the U.S. have caught up to their brethren in the U.K. and watched the cliffhanger of an ending to season two. The bad news is that we're all going to have to wait a long time until season three, which doesn't even start filming until next year! Boo.

I had to do it! I’ve been waiting to finish off Sherlock (so to speak), in part because life has been busy, and in part because it would mean a lengthy wait for season three before my next Sherlock fix. But I just had to watch “The Reichenbach Fall” before it official airs on PBS in May.

TV in Review: Sherlock, “The Hounds of Baskerville”

This review lands in the middle of a puddle, so to speak. It’s halfway between January, when the episode premiered in the UK, and May, when the it will air in the the States.  Once again, I try not to give away any of the crucial turns in the mystery, but if you want to avoid any hint of a half-spoiler, turn back now!

For those of you who have not yet seen “A Scandal in Belgravia” — PBS is due to start airing season two of Sherlock on May 6, 2012 — this review talks about the episode, but doesn’t give away any information crucial to the mysteries. Still, if you want to wait and see it fresh without any clue, turn away from the door now!

TV in Review: Sherlock, “The Great Game”

I thought that watching it would give me a sense of completion, but another late night viewing of Sherlock (2010) just left me wanting more.

It’s been interesting to see how a television season can be fashioned out of only three episodes. The first, “A Study in Pink,” was like watching a new star make an entrance, fully formed. I felt like co-creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss had given me a personal gift. The second episode, “The Blind Banker,” was disappointing in its Orientalism but nonetheless more entertaining than most television fare. And now that I’ve watched the third and final episode, “The Great Game,” all I can say is…bring on season two!

TV in Review: Sherlock, “The Blind Banker”

Please don’t be mad at me, but I wasn’t as thrilled with “The Blind Banker” as I was with “A Study in Pink.”

Some of it has to do with the old-fashioned Orientalism of “The Blind Banker.” In this episode, the second of the first Sherlock series, we are supposed to be wowed by the mysterious Orient, which is presented mostly as an assortment of objects. This frames the whole story…we open in a museum, introduced to magical tea cups, and in the end it’s an object from the Orient that solves the whole case.

TV in Review: Sherlock, “A Study in Pink”

Okay, so I’m late to the game as usual with Sherlock…but in a way, aren’t we all late when matched up against Mr. Holmes?

Sherlock premiered in the UK in July of 2010 and is an update of the the classic mysteries penned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle over a century ago. The opening seconds are quite insistent about how un-Victorian they are — the slickly shot images of modern warfare announce to us that this is not going to be an old-fashioned BBC costume drama.
