Comedy and Politics with Mike Donovan and Jimmy Tingle

This appears to be one of those weeks where I try to catch up on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast, mostly by listening in the car as I drive to work and friends, and from work and friends. Oh, and I also drive to the gym.

In Episode 250, Maron returns to do a show in Boston, where he went to college and first got into comedy. There are two highlights of the show for me, one of them an Inside Comedy Moment, and the other a Political Comedy Moment.

Jimmy Kimmel on David Letterman on Marc Maron

Television had a very different feel before Late Night with David Letterman premiered in 1982. There were pockets of irony, but Letterman’s influence spread far and wide, and by the time of Seinfeld’s sitcom success in the 1990s, irony had become a way of being for much of the television landscape.

Podcast Moment: Comedian Ralphie May on WTF

In the not-so-large circle of stand-up comedians, Jay Mohr does not have a stellar reputation.

I believe it’s on Episode 148 of Marc Maron’s WTF that Bobcat Goldthwait goes into a tirade against Mohr, as just one example. So on Episode 247, there’s a definite moment of interest for comedy nerds when fellow stand-up Ralphie May praises Mohr effusively.

WTF Catch-up with Russell Brand, Steven Wright, and Todd Glass

The last couple weeks have seen another intriguing array of comedy veterans come through Marc Maron’s WTF podcast.

Episode 242 with Russell Brand was taped before Brand’s widely covered break-up with Katy Perry. (The latest impending divorce news includes the scandalous tidbit that Perry no longer follows Russell’s Twitter account.)

Comedy Podcast Review

Sidesplitter has a review up of its favorite comedy podcasts from 2011. It includes a special category for my favorite of the favorites, Marc Maron’s WTF, acknowledging that he has pushed the whole medium forward.

It is through Marc that a great deal of people learned that Podcasts were not just that weird word below “TV Shows” on the iTunes library but a medium where serious art is being made. When people talk about the legendary episodes, it’s usually Judd Apatow, Dane Cook, Louis C.K., or Carlos Mencia, which were all from 2010 but this season had some less touted but equally as brilliant moments.

Maron interviews Michael Ian Black

As Marc Maron’s WTF podcast has grown in popularity and Maron has (somewhat) matured, the show continues to be fascinating but has fewer awkward moments. The latest episode brings back the tension, this time between Maron and guest Michael Ian Black, of The State fame. On top of the personal dynamic of entertainers who have known and competed against each other (if only in their heads) for years, there’s some interesting investigation of how much of a comedy performer’s on-stage character remains when off-stage, particularly when it comes to MIB’s “smug asshole” character.

Russell Peters and the Download Effect

On Monday’s episode of Marc Maron’s podcast WTF, Russell Peters noted how his latest DVD (The Green Card Tour) isn’t selling as well much he hoped, and how he is upset with potential downloaders. The irony of the situation stems from this comment arriving after approximately 40 minutes discussing how his worldwide success came after people shared his 2004 Comedy Now! special on YouTube. That’s right, Peters has internet pirates to thank for his ability to show up to this interview in a Rolls Royce.
