It’s the kids’ chorus that makes this one extra fun.

Went to a new hair stylist recently and was impressed by his taste. He recommended a 1930s comedy duo I’d never heard of, a treatise on dirty jokes that had also escaped my attention, a small bookstore on Post Street in San Francisco — and the music playing in his salon was Bettye LaVette. Here she is singing “Let Me Down Easy.”

T. and I are about 2/3 of the way through The Beatles’ 1965 film Help!, which I haven’t watched since high school. Lord knows I love me some Beatles, who serve as the foundation of my sense of music, but Help! simply isn’t as strong a film as 1964′s A Hard Day’s Night. Sure, Help! has plenty of fun, and some extraordinary songs, but the larger framework of the ring which designates a sacrificial victim just doesn’t work as well A Hard Day’s Night, when their journey to putting on a concert served as a sufficient excuse to all of the shenanigans. Oh well, I still love the boys. Enough so that I’ll probably even re-watch 1967′s Magical Mystery Tour one of these days.
Here are the Beatles on August 14, 1965, singing Help! on The Ed Sullivan Show.

This week Cee Lo Green got into the “Bein’ Green” cover business, which has been going on for some time. Back in 1970, Frank Sinatra covered the Joe Raposo tune for his album Sinatra & Company, which came out the next year. I wish there were a video!

Hot off his Christmas song with the Muppets, Cee Lo Green brought Kermit onto NBC’s The Voice to do a duet of “Bein’ Green.” Normally I’m a huge fan of Cee Lo’s fashion sense, but apparently it’s not easy wearing green, either.

My brother is a Muppetoholic, and pointed me to this holiday collaboration between CeeLo Green and the Muppets. The video is seven minutes long, but about two minutes is spent on credits and outtakes. That’s fair enough, as it’s less about the song and more about Cee Lo and the Muppets (and the special guest star Santa) cavorting together.
They cavort well.
And I miss Jim Henson.

Because it’s Saturday night, y’all!
Love how they lip sync and don’t even bother have the keyboards represented on stage.

Remember Rebecca Black’s viral sensation, “Friday”? You may have tried to scrub it from your memory, although I’m still a big fan of Stephen Colbert’s rendition, performed on Jimmy Fallon’s show. Well, the producer of “Friday,” Patrice Wilson, has helped birth another YouTube phenom. Here’s Nicole Westbrook with “Thanksgiving.” It’s offensive (black guy showing up to eat Thanksgiving ribs), it’s creepy, and it does a great job of capturing how awkward and unfortunate the middle school years can be.
No need to thank me.
Hope you’re having a great holiday!

The cooking motif also fits in nicely with Thanksgiving…

From 1968, here’s a top ten hit by Sam & Dave to put us all in the right frame of mind for Thanksgiving.
Coincidentally, the backing players are wearing just what I’ll be wearing on Thursday, as I offer my thanks for the mashed potatoes…
You didn’t have to make it like you did
but you did but you did
And I thank you.
