Monday Night Photo – Dan Savage and Terry Miller Marry in Washington State

I’m a big-time Dan Savage fan. He has his critics on the left, but he’s so often been out there on the forefront of gay rights and sex positivity. I also remember how, when I was an undergraduate at the University of Massachusetts, Savage’s print column in the local alternative weekly was the only aggressive voice I knew speaking regularly on behalf of minority voices in the sex community. Now that we’re both older, I treasure the diversity and thoughtfulness of his podcast. And now that Washington State finally legalized same sex marriage, Dan and his already-husband-in-Canada Terry Miller got themselves wed in Washington!

Sunday Night Video – Questioning Woody Allen

I haven’t seen Robert Weide’s Woody Allen: A Documentary, but I’m interested. Watching the following unusual questions posed to Allen, I was struck at how much of an old man Allen is. Sure, he’s long looked old and even creepy, but more than the answers, I was struck by his slowed-down demeanor. Presumably it’s partially just due to him not playing the frantic version of himself he places on the big screen, but sitting down to answer questions one-on-one.

Tuesday Night Video – Cee Lo Green & the Muppets, “All I Need Is Love”

My brother is a Muppetoholic, and pointed me to this holiday collaboration between CeeLo Green and the Muppets. The video is seven minutes long, but about two minutes is spent on credits and outtakes. That’s fair enough, as it’s less about the song and more about Cee Lo and the Muppets (and the special guest star Santa) cavorting together.

They cavort well.

And I miss Jim Henson.

Saturday Night Photo – McKayla Maroney and Barack Obama are Not Impressed

Can you remember the past? How about way back to the summer, when McKayla Maroney fell during her vault routine and wound up with a silver medal rather than the expected gold?

McKayla made an “I am not impressed” face during the medal ceremony and was photoshopped into a bunch of other pictures with that expression. Here she was, not impressed by Mitt Romney’s choice of Paul Ryan to be the GOP VP candidate. And here she was yesterday, having fun in the White House. President Obama’s likability comes through pretty well here.

Quote of the Day: Howard Stern on his Vote

I’m voting for Obama and I’ll tell you why. I’m sick and tired of the bullshit with this “the states will run everything.” This is the answer, “the states will run everything”! I see in Jersey, “we’ll just about have the state run everything” — thank God for the federal government, and thank God for the federal government here in New York. What will we do? There’s no money to sit there and fix the devastation that’s gone on. I mean, what is it? What are these guys, high?…

I’ve had it with this nonsense about “We don’t need the federal government. We don’t need regulations. We don’t need the federal government; the states will handle it.” The states? Where are the states going to get the kind of money to handle this? There’s going to be billions of dollars in repairs.

I’m exhausted from it. When is this election going to be over already?

Monday Night Video – Rosie Perez is Smarter than Mitt Romney

Rosie Perez is smarter than Mitt Romney. Also, funnier.

Quote of the Day: Howard Stern Praises Rachel Maddow

I was watching MSNBC. That Rachel Maddow is fabulous. I mean, what a wealth of information she has! I guess they have writers on that show. Could she possibly know everything in the world about politics and government? I’d like to see her debate, like, Bill O’Reilly. Bill O’Reilly’s all crowing about debating Jon Stewart, who’s a comedian, who happens to be pretty knowledgeable himself, but I don’t think Sean Hannity or Rush Limbaugh or Bill O’Reilly would debate Rachel Maddow. She knows too much. She knows too much.

Quote of the Day: Howard Stern Gives Advice to Todd Akin

You got duped by some dude who told you he was a doctor and gave you advice that women can keep sperm away from themselves when they’re, you know, “legitimately raped.” You really think you should be making a judgment call on anything? You should question everything about yourself.

Wednesday Night Video – Phyllis Diller on The Muppet Show

I appreciate the applause as Phyllis Diller exits stage left, but don’t fully agree with the assessment of the recently deceased Diller as “the first female stand-up comedian.” If we’re going to count her act as pure stand-up — as distinct from than the vaudevillian mode that dominated in the early twentieth century — then how are we to label Moms Mabley?

Of course, both Diller and Mabley were hugely influential when it comes to female stand-up comedians, with echoes that can still be seen all over the humor map — from the self-criticism of Tina Fey to the acerbic wit of Amy Schumer. Mabley and Diller had at least one foot in the older world of variety entertainment, which offered comic monologues alongside other forms of entertainment. That sort of multi-faceted background is also one reason why Diller could be funny without even talking, and why she fit so comfortably on-stage with the likes of the Muppets. Blow, Phyllis, blow…

Roseanne on the Roseanne Roast

The Roseanne roast will be airing on Comedy Central this Sunday and the famed comedian called in to the Howard Stern Radio Show this morning for promotional purposes. I’m a huge Roseanne fan on many levels. She’s a terrifically talented woman who spearheaded one of the funniest and most important sitcoms of all time. She’s also tremendously brave, repeatedly willing to risk reputation for the sake of telling her truths. I like to think that her desire to endure the flames of a  roast reflects in part her love for the roughhouse of stand-up comedy.

Quote of the Day: Howard Stern on Dick Cheney

I can’t believe this Dick Cheney opens his mouth again….so what would you do in Syria, just send in Halliburton again?

Quote of the Day: Russell Brand

If you don’t think too much about spirituality — and why would you, living in a material world with our myths all severed now, living here adrift in some material oblivion? It’s a weird time to think of it, we’re all lapping on the senseless shores of materialism. And then occasionally you’ll see the Dalai Lama and you’ll go “Oh, yeah. Fuck.”
