Wednesday Night Videos – Andy Williams

Andy Williams passed away yesterday. According to The Telegraph, Williams died a batshit crazy man, calling President Obama a Marxist who wanted the country to fail. Oh, Andy. And yet he had raised funds for George McGovern’s 1972 presidential campaign? People are strange.
Williams may be best remembered for one song — “Moon River.” Here he is singing the song, supposedly on his own show in 1961. That’s according to the YouTube caption — Wikipedia says that The Andy Williams Show ran from 1962-1971, but Williams had a number of specials and variety series.
And here’s Williams singing “The Girl from Ipanema” with Antonio Carlos Jobim, live in 1965. How is it possible to be so cool and uncool at the same time?
While we’re in the ’60s, here’s Williams singing the super-cheesy “Music To Watch The Girls Go By” in 1966. Brightly-colored Broadway on the small screen.
I hadn’t realized that Williams’ re-recorded “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” in 2002, as a duet with Denise Van Outen. Same cheese, different decade.
Finally, ever wondered how Andy Williams got started in show business? He explained it to Scooter on The Muppet Show in 1980, starting at 5:24.
It’s hard to qualify his anti-Obama remarks as “batshit crazy,” as that’s basically become standard fare for conservatives.
Well, maybe those terms have simply become interchangeable?
