TV in Review: Louie, “Something Is Wrong”

Season Three of Louie arrived last week with “Something Is Wrong” — the very title of which signals that something also must be right, because we expect (we want and desire) Louis C.K. to give us comedic insight into everything from the awkward to the horrible. He starts the season off by talking about how, as he ages, he now has to masturbate while wearing reading glasses. It’s difficult to explain to people who don’t know the show how this humor is poignant, no matter how far he pushes it…and he does.
How well-written was the break-up scene between April and Louie? It was a dance between the two characters, with April presuming knowledge of Louie’s internal thinking, prodding and poking and making assumptions because he’s so god-damned unable to communicate clearly off-stage that his silence and inarticulate mumblings prod and poke her in return. I may have appreciated it as much as I did because I’ve been there, in relationships where it’s clear as day how each person has an extremely limited script, and so the dialogue (and the relationship) plays out as if neither of us were staff writers on our own show. Does that make sense? I’m not sure if I’m making sense, but hey, that’s very appropriate for this show.
A better moment for that realization of being trapped may be the image of what happens to Louie’s car…
And the laugh-out-loud moment for me was Louie riding a motorcycle, being shown up by a motorcycle gang popping wheelies.
I laughed, and then Louie crashes. Perfect.
And yeah, the woman in the background at the hospital wailing “why won’t somebody help me” definitely jibes with my recent experiences of our health care system. But mostly, it’s that expertly choreographed dance of frustration between Louie and April that made this a satisfying viewing experience for me.
LOUIE: Do you want to stay?
APRIL: Stay. How are you saying stay? How do you mean that?
LOUIE: I mean that maybe you should.
Satisfying, but also painful.
I need some ice cream.
FX first aired Season 3, Episode 1 of Louie on June 28, 2012.
