Saturday Night Video – Bruce Springsteen, “Born in the USA”

I don’t know if you’ve ever heard the original demo for Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” but it’s a fairly gut-wrenching song of the struggles that can be borne by being born in this country. Here’s a different version from that original, and also different from the rock anthem version that he put on the 1984 album. It’s an acoustic version from Spanish television, and helps show how Springsteen belongs to the folk (as well as rock) tradition.
This is great. Thanks for sharing! As a Asbury Park local reporter and resident i regularly hear Springsteen sightings from fans. Until 2009 (i think) when i heard him rehearse at the famed convention hall here (look it up) i didnt realize i would be ‘baptized into the religion of springsteen’ as many said afterward. There few live performers of his caliber. Great talent as well as a great man!!! Thanks again for the post. Cheers!
It’s one of my great regrets that I’ve never seen him live. I’ve never felt like I had the money to justify a ticket, but he’s really one of those figures who I could have seen and kept those memories for a lifetime. Like with stand-up, I’m really glad that I saw Dave Chappelle, both for the show itself, and for the memories that will stick.
Actually really enjoyed that version. Thanks for sharing it…
And to think Reagan wanted to use it in his campaign!
Best Christmas present I’ve ever gotten was the 75-85 live box set (on vinyl!) when I was about ten years old. Thanks mom and dad.
I’m pretty sure I got that as a Christmas, present, too! On cassette, though. I wonder where it went? Probably still somewhere in my parents’ house…
