Saturday Night Video – Bruce Springsteen, “Born in the USA”

I don’t know if you’ve ever heard the original demo for Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” but it’s a fairly gut-wrenching song of the struggles that can be borne by being born in this country. Here’s a different version from that original, and also different from the rock anthem version that he put on the 1984 album. It’s an acoustic version from Spanish television, and helps show how Springsteen belongs to the folk (as well as rock) tradition.

Scott Brown: A Royal Flop

Sen. Scott Brown has been ridiculed for claiming to have met with royalty, and, yes, that’s funny, but even less senatorial is the complete lack of specificity in what he said. When someone accuses you of not getting serious work done, isn’t the most effective rebuttal to point to, I don’t know… an accomplishment? Shouldn’t someone who’s been working on serious issues be able to name one?

Each and every day that I’ve been a United States senator, I’ve been discussing issues, meeting on issues, in secret meetings and with kings and queens and prime ministers and business leaders and military leaders, talking, voting, working on issues every single day.

Sen. Scott Brown on radio’s Jim Braude and Margery Eagan Show

“I’ve been meeting with queens and with kings
Every day on the job, pulling strings.
As a senator, I’m
Working hard all the time
On big issues and… issues and… things.”
