Explicit Penguin Sex

Versions of this awkward headline appear all over the web:

It’s hard to know where the idea originated, but clearly headline writers all over have no problem with calling certain sex acts more “explicit” than others.

In the common version shown above, apparently the polar explorer (the expedition leader or the team surgeon whose journal the articles describe) believed, until observing Adelie penguins first hand, that their sex would be merely implied–implied, presumably, by the fact that the species still existed.
