Monday Night Video – Marianne Faithfull, “As Tears Go By”

Introducing Paul Anka introducing Brian Epstein introducing Marianne Faithfull.  I find Faithfull fascinating and spent a few minutes over the weekend looking up some of her earliest appearances. I know it was the style of the times, but I’m still struck by how so many of them keep her in just one or two still poses, which also fits the caged bird quality of her voice.

EPSTEIN: How did it all start?

FAITHFULL: I met Andrew Oldham at a party. And he asked me if I’d like to make a record because he thought I had a face that could sell.

EPSTEIN: And what did you think?

FAITHFULL: I thought, “This is fine. Perhaps I have — let’s sell it.”

All one needs are fragile economies, a rigid monetary regime, intense debate over what must be done, widespread belief that suffering is good, myopic politicians, an inability to co-operate and failure to stay ahead of events.
