Mad Men: The Last Shots of Lane Pryce

There are a few more images of Lane Pryce from “Commissions and Fees” which I wanted to share with Mad Men fans.

The episode began, of course, with a glimmer of hope for Lane. He could see his way out, as he received kudos for his work keeping the firm running before it finally gained Jaguar. Lane, you have arrived! Enjoy it while it lasts, which will be approximately one morning…

Jared Harris does an exquisite job of playing multiple emotions as Lane is confronted with the evidence of his embezzlement, and has to try and be jolly old Lane, even as doom proceeds to knock at the door, open the door, and start smashing up his insides…

There’s Lane’s last look at Don…

…before we get Lane’s last longing look at Joan, as he realizes she is not going to be his savior…

Now, it can’t be a coincidence that Lane has the New York Mets banner hanging in his office, during the years when they were losing a 100 games a season. Lane Pryce and the Mets in the ’60s, both filled with charming futility.

And then there’s Lane and Rebecca. The jaguar was such a brutal gift, both a reminder of his supposed triumph, and yet at a great cost which he just couldn’t afford.

Apparently Lane will still be a presence in next week’s finale. That’s to be expected. This can’t be something that is easily forgotten.

Thanks for the focus on Lane. What a great actor! That face you caught, when he gets the Jag. Other commenters have reminded me of the connection to Don/Dick’s little brother hanging himself in earlier seasons. Casualties of the brutality of this world.

I’m glad they reminded you of Adam Whitman, as I’d forgotten about him, but of course the connection is there and it has to rock Don’s foundations. So many directions for Don to take in reaction from this — back to the performance of masculinity, or stick with the attempt at a sincere marriage, or something new. I suspect that we’ll be offered a taste of those possibilities in the finale, but without being given a definitive answer.
