Donna Summer Has Been Left Out In The Rain

I find the song “MacArthur Park” mesmerizing. Written by Jimmy Webb, the song first became a hit when the actor Richard Harris recorded it in 1968, as if on a dare. And the public accepted said dare, buying the single of the song which appears to bemoan a melted cake with operatic despair.

I don’t think that I can take it
’cause it took so long to bake it
And I’ll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!

And now Donna Summer has been taken away from us, far too early. I like to think that, up in heaven, the disco beat goes on.

There will be another song for me
For I will sing it
There will be another dream for me
Someone will bring it
I will drink the wine while it is warm.

As a kid, I used to hear “MacArthur Park” and just wonder what the hell THAT was all about. Possibly my first experience with mind-altering substances, even though it was only music.
