Wednesday Night Video – Paul Krugman Visits Rachel Maddow

Paul Krugman was on The Rachel Maddow Show last night speaking about his new book, End This Depression Now. He has clear, articulate, practical solutions to our continuing willful economic crisis. Quote of the Day: Unknown

Taste is the enemy of Art.

- Unknown.

I’ve seen this attributed on the internet to Picasso, Edwin Dickinson, Salvador Dali, Truman Capote, William Burroughs, and Anita Steckel. I saw a television interview of Eric Idle attribute it to Idle himself, who did not protest. The book Please Touch: Dada and Surrealist Objects after the Readymade attributes it to Marcel Duchamp, citing a 1968 article by Francis Roberts in Art News, entitled “I Propose to Strain the Laws of Physics.” Unpacking Duchamp: Art in Transit also relies on Roberts. So should we trust books over the internet? What then to make of the book Collaborative Quilting, which attributes the quote to Picasso?

Pointing out all these inconsistencies may be in bad taste, but as I’ve always said, taste is the enemy of art. Feel free to quote me.
