The Colbert Report on Rep. Steve King and Obamacare

On Monday, Stephen Colbert noted that the Republican primary contest is coming to a close.

COLBERT: After a bruising Republican primary season, the foreplay is over, and like all Republican foreplay, it was expensive, vindictive, and ended with something pretty predictable.

So, with a young Mitt Romney’s thoughts turning to finding himself a companion, who might Mittens select? One possible VP candidate is Iowa Congressman Steve King. He appears to be an expert on why the Commerce Clause should not allow the individual mandate, because not everyone will engage in the health care system.

STEVE KING: What I have said is that, in every decade, in every state, there has always been babies that were born, lived, and died, and some of them a long and healthy life, without ever using a dollar worth of health care expenditures.

COLBERT: Yes, in every state, babies are born all the time who are delivered at home,  don’t get any vaccinations, never see a dentist, make it through school without ever getting strep throat or head lice or pink eye or mono, have perfect vision, never get sick as an adult, keep all of their mental faculties and die happily at the age of 110 surrounded by all of their loving children, who were also born at home and never got vaccinated or sick. I mean, after all, Americans were fine before “modern medicine.” They worked hard, raised families, and passed away of natural causes at the ripe old age of 28.

The individual mandate used to be the Republican solution to providing health care for Americans. Now that providing health care is no longer something they even care to be seen promoting, they can afford to abandon the individual mandate.

And of course, their real enemy isn’t the individual mandate, but President Obama. It was his adoption of the conservative option of the mandate, as opposed to single payer or the public option, which turned them against it.

That’s the truth behind the labeling of the Affordable Care Act as Obamacare. Their real target is Obama.

Love Colbert! He is so good at illuminating the absurd. Steve King is an unhinged and frighteningly hateful man. I don’t understand how ignorant people like him are elected to public office.
