Stern Bats Down Bachmann

Howard Stern reacted on Tuesday to Michele Bachmann’s admonition that we should open our hearts to the anti-gay bigotry exhibited those such as Kirk Cameron.
On Monday, Bachmann had told Piers Morgan…
I think it’s very important though that people who have sincerely held religious beliefs — I do — I think it’s important that we respect those people’s beliefs.
On Tuesday, Stern used the comedian’s technique of exposing an idea by extending its logic.
STERN: Respect people’s beliefs who believe that gay people should be converted to heterosexuals? It’s like this whole “let’s not believe in science” bullshit. Why do I have to respect somebody’s beliefs because they’re religious beliefs? So should I respect those guys who put a fatwa, or whatever the f#ck it is, on our country?
I agree with Stern that bigotry shouldn’t be excused simply because it’s religious in nature, and I appreciate that he’s been reminding his audience that Bachmann’s husband Marcus has attempted to use Christian counseling to “cure” homosexuals. Truth Wins Out, which is a group trying to combat this sick and sickening practice, has the undercover report.

What they’re really asking is that others respect their disrespect of others. Everyone respects their right not to engage in homosexual acts, but they try to enforce that choice on others. They’re entitled to believe in creationism or intelligent design, but they call this science and foist it on the rest of us. It’s they who refuse to respect others.
I agree, and Bachmann seems to have no idea that she’s being disrespectful, as she plays the perpetual victim.
There’s beliefs, and then there’s hostility. Your religion tells you homosexuality is a sin? Great! I’m fine with that. Live your life according to those beliefs, and I will respect your right to do so. You think your religion can justify speaking in a judgmental or hateful manner about gay people? Or that your religion can justify your attempts to force other grown-ass adults to change their lives to better accommodate your views? Sorry, you lost me right there.
Yes, Bachmann and her ilk engage in hostility, and it’s a very active hostility, too!
