Tuesday Night Video – Loving Our Libraries

A town near where I used to live is raising money for its library via the power of the ukelele. As with post offices, I think of libraries as essential ingredients to democracy.

Austere Consequences

Paul Krugman keeps churning out sharp insights that can be difficult to find in the traditional media. He had another terrific piece recently, entitled Austerity, American Style, in which he notes the decline in real government spending during this attempt at recession recovery, in opposition to the past two. Perhaps that’s why it’s taking so long? He makes the point even more directly in Reagan, Obama, Austerity, by comparing recent government spending with that of Reagan’s government in 1982.

At this point in the Reagan recovery government spending had risen 11.6 percent; this time around it’s actually down by 2.6 percent. So if we had followed the Reagan track, spending would be almost 15 percent higher.

Lindsay Lohan on Saturday Night Live

Lindsay Lohan hosted Saturday Night Live this past weekend because Lorne Michaels works overtime to make the show relevant to the pop culture discussion, while Lohan needed a forum in which to show insurance companies that she can be relied upon to show up for her gigs and that she hasn’t sputtered out at the age of 25.

My thoughts were mixed as I saw Lohan step forward to make her monologue. Lindsay is such a subject of scrutiny that the liveness of the show felt like it mattered again. There’s Lindsay, it’s actually her!
