Best of Harper’s Index

Harper’s index is a terrific source for insightful facts on the world around us. The February 2012 issue has a few on the common perceptions of unemployment versus the deficit. It’s as you might expect…

Factor by which an American is more likely to cite unemployment than the deficit as the country’s “most important problem”: 3

Factor by which a wealthy American is more likely to cite the deficit than unemployment: 3

…and what does this tell you about the wealth of a media that tends to be more concerned with the deficit?

Harper’s also provides us with some stats on the effectiveness of spending

Estimated number of jobs created by every $1,000,000,000 of military spending: 11,000

By the same amount devoted to education: 27,000

All of this would be relevant if the so-called economic conservatives actually cared about a functioning economy.
