Comedy podcast nerds know that Jon Hamm is a comedy podcast nerd, so it’s not a surprise when the Mad Men star shows up on Doug Loves Movies’Tournament of Championships, featuring special winners of previous competitions. This week’s contestants in The Leonard Maltin Game: Jon Hamm, Paul F. Tomkins, and Anthony Jeselnik. I won’t give away the results, but as befits his sultry status, Mr. Hamm scores first.

The inimitable Charlie Pierce has a blog posting up which parses David Gregory’s exquisite mix of idiocy and elitism. Over the weekend, Gregory pressed John Huntsman on how he would make the American people feel pain. Pierce points out the basics: that the mainstream media equates being serious with inflicting pain on the commoners.

When did all movies start getting named like academic papers, with titles invariably followed by subtitles? It seems a bit ponderous, but despite the weight of the name, Hollywood still kicks academia’s ass when it comes to explosions, car chases, and aerial feats.

In a letter to The New Yorker (January 9, 2012 edition), Dr. Joshua Bamberger writes that the Department of Public Health in San Francisco has:
observed that people who are housed in more aesthetically pleasing and functional buildings, and in those which are in safer neighborhoods, have had more dramatic reductions in health-care utilization than people directed to less pleasant housing….most people know intuitively that safety and beauty can help cure the ills of modern society…
Not just the good kind of beauty that can be used to sell shampoo, but the other kind of beauty that can improve well-being. Give me some of that!
