Harry News: Rowling (almost) Wronged Ron

My mother sent me a link to the Guardian newspaper article which reports that JK Rowling once considered killing off Ron Weasley. I had always assumed that there was an unwritten contract between Rowling and her readers that the Big Three of Harry, Hermione, and Ron were all untouchable. From the sounds of it, that was indeed the case, but Rowling contemplated breaking that contract. Rowling says she thought of killing Ron out of spite, because she “wasn’t in a very happy place,” but the article doesn’t delve into that more intriguing backstory.

  1. I’m sincerely glad she didn’t kill him off, though I wish she didn’t kill off Fred, he and George were my two favorite characters in that series. I would have much preferred to see Percy die…

It would have been nice to see Fred & George safe at the end. Perhaps she wanted to show some consequences to the final fight, and felt we could spare a twin?

  3. Jeyna Grace says:

If Ron did die… it would have been a disaster!

She traded Fred for Ron. She had planned to kill Ron in the 5th book I think, but she kept him, and killed Fred later instead. She said something along the lines of she couldn’t leave the Weasley’s untouched or something like that. Though having Bill mauled by a werewolf was hardly untouched.
