Noriega Returns to Panama

According to this report by The New York Times, the United States invaded Panama because it wasn’t preventing cocaine from reaching the U.S. No suggestion of other motives, or follow-up on why the steady supply of drugs appears to have continued in the ensuing decades. Even (especially?) in retrospect, the arrest of Manuel Noriega does emphasize how outwardly arbitrary is the use of U.S. military force.

Crackdown on Domestic Dissent, Part 4

Whether you support their methods or not, Occupy Wall Street is doing a pretty good job highlighting how limited the right to political assembly is in the United States.

Baldwin’s Back (but did he ever leave?)

The article regarding Alec Baldwin’s guest appearance during yesterday’s Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live is titled “Alec Baldwin spoofs himself on SNL” but the accompanying video clip doesn’t really show much self-mockery. It has Baldwin mocking American Airlines first and the whole situation of him getting thrown off the airplane earlier this week second. Self-mockery comes a distant third, perhaps in the form of the asides where Seth Meyers asks Baldwin if this is the best way to handle matters, but Baldwin is clearly using his legendary comic timing and charm to deflate the bad publicity, not his own ego.
